GOS: one step closer to breast milk
One of the main constituents of human milk are small, galactose-based fibers. These prebiotic fibers stimulate the implementation of a favorable gut microbiota rich in specific bifidobacteria, and the development of the immune system and normal transit.
However Cow’s milk, the main ingredient used for infant formulas, contains very few oligosaccharides.
Supplementation with P-GOS® galacto-oligo-saccharides offers a safe and easy alternative to stimulate the right bifidobacteria, thus bringing infant formulas one step closer to human milk.
And since P-GOS® is gently extracted from legumes, this is now even possible for 100% plant-based, lactose-free or hypoallergenic formulas.

Mode of action
Intestinal bifidobacteria are considered beneficial, especially in infants, as they:
- hold anti-inflammatory properties,
- contribute to colonization resistance against pathogens,
- improve digestion and absorption (2).
Term breast-fed infants have a gut microbiota dominated by Bifidobacteria. Conversely the microbiota of infants fed with milk-based or plant-based formulas are richer in clostridia and bacteroides. (3,4)
P-GOS stimulates the production of SCFAs such as butyrate and the growth of Bifidobacteria. It inhibits the growth of clostridia, especially C. difficile (Involved in diarrhea) as well as strains close to these species.
Proofs of efficacy
Stools of healthy infants were co-incubated (6 samples per substance) with different prebiotics (4 mg/mL) or control (no product) during 20 hours, in presence or not of Clostridium difficile.
DNA was then isolated and 16S QPCR was used to analyze total bacterial levels.
Intestinal I-Chip (TNO-Zeist) was performed to analyze bacterial species.

Applications
Infant nutrition
P-GOS® is perfectly soluble in water, tasteless and slightly sweet. The powder's flowability is very good.
